The Power of 360 Degree Feedback:

The term 360 degree feedback (DF) came from the west. However, the methodology existed in ancient Asian culture where good Kings and leaders sought anonymous feedback to assess the impact of their policies and styles on people they ruled. As a modern management tool 360 DF has been used in this part of the world rather extensively for the last 30 years.

Prof. T V Rao started this methodology at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad and continued to use it for several thousands of managers with good results. Those top level managers who used it report significant changes in terms of playing their leadership and managerial roles more effectively and enhance their impact on their juniors, seniors, colleagues and others. Some of their juniors report noticeable changes in their styles. However sometimes over-commercialization of this tool may involve misuse of this methodology. 360 DF is to be sued as a self-development tool and facilitated by corporation. The session will also present the conditions for successful use of this tool.

This session outlines the methodology and processes to be used for effective use of this tool in leadership development, succession development, creating a happiness at work place and achieve desired results. The session also presents the evolution of this tool, theoretical underpinnings for behavior change and illustrates examples of case studies of change. The session presents how the 360 DF if used can be a powerful tool in bringing change in the leadership styles and actions of executives.

Prof. Rao also will share the findings of his research from his book “100 Managers in Action” where he documented life stories of about 100 managers chosen from over 8000 mangers going through the 360 DF and assessed by over 80,000 employees.

Session Outline Prof. Dr. ISF Raj

Human Resource Management is a strategic and systematic approach to the management of the most valued assets of an organization. People in an organization both individually and collectively contribute to the achievement of the organization’s objectives and thus their contribution to organization excellence is indisputable. If one were walk through the allies of the several decades, one would realize the central role Human Resource has been playing in making and sustaining the vitality and success of organization.

A cursory glance of the meaning and understanding attributed to HR reveal to us the dynamic way the role and meaning of HR have evolved. It was primarily focused on policies and systems designed to maximize employee performance and productivity. The shift was then to create business value and focus on strategic initiatives like M & A, succession planning and management of talents in the organizations so that HR has started emerging as a field by itself continually expanding and accommodating anything and everything that is of the organization to its infinity. It would not be an exaggeration then to say HR IS FOR ALL AND ALL FOR HR.

The historical evolution of HR since the early periods in the 1700s to the recent times indicates the width and breadth of areas, which HR, as a field has grown.

Today HR is called upon to be responsive play. The need for HR Managers to be responsive to the demands of the paradigm shift by being effective and responding to the call for all seasons, contribute to the growth and development of learning culture in organizations.
